Cumpleanos

Friday was the first day back at school. It was not a "teaching" day. Instead, it was the monthly celebration of birthdays (cumpleanos). Each month, the whole school celebrates the kids who had a birthday that month. There's tostados with frijoles, pinatas, and presents. It's a lot of fun as well as a great photo-op.

I got to meet my students for the first time, too. I'm teaching 4th/5th grade. I also reunited with a few of my previous students. Some of them will be in my class this time, as well. One of them, Victor, acted like he didn't know me at first. I went up to him and asked him if he remembered me. He nodded. I asked him what his name was (I forgot most of the students names, not faces). He said, Victor. I said, "Victor Antonio?" remembering his last name. At that, his adolescent demeanor melted and he smiled.

Not all of the students came to school on Friday, but I got to meet some of my new students. During dismissal, the students had to line up according to their class. That was my first introduction to them. My first impression is that this age is dealing with a big boy/girl issue. The boys call the girls names, get them frustrated, so that they'll chase them around. It works the opposite way, as well.
